Indeed. I’ve never understood eruvs (eruvim?) either. It’s odd that people “commit” to compliance with religious laws (many of them IMHO silly) and then begin finding ways to effectively negate them. I don’t recall the word for it: strict Muslims eschew the lending or borrowing of money; but there is a parallel financial system which allows “Islamic Mortgages.” Same approach. Not to say, of course, that inconsistency is an alien concept to the agnostic and the secular . . .
