“True friendship, like true love, requires trust and equal value. . . Friendship comes after justice, not before.”

I agree with the first part; I’m a little unsure about the second.

I think individuals can get to the point where we trust each other and agree that we value each other equally.

But “justice” strikes me as cultural/political/institutional/economic; we can’t, as individuals “create” justice for other people (although we should certainly work collectively toward that end).

As I read this, interracial friendship, under current circumstances, is simply impossible.

What am I missing? School me, Kay . . .
